1995
Title
1995
Description
Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, Ukraine experienced deeper economic slowdowns than other former Soviet republics. During the recession of the 1990s, Ukraine lost 60 percent of its gross domestic product. Inflation soared as high as 2,000 percent. Factories and collective farms closed down. People had to supplement their incomes by growing their own food or by raising animals.
The resilient couple in this photo are clearly very proud of their large rabbit, one of many they are raising on their small farm in the central Vinnytsya region. In Ukraine, rabbits provide food and pelts that can be sold.
