1988
Description
A photographer's eye for composition can give an added dimension to a "slice of life" shot, offering a glimpse of how people dress and what their homes look like. Here, two men, possibly a father and an uncle in Sololá, Guatemala, watch with pride and some amusement as the youngster peers out the front door.
The marvellous textural quality in this photo is seen in the colours and weaves of the clothing, right down to the whitewashed brick exterior of the family dwelling. As well, the effective use of scale gives this shot added interest: the small child in the centre, watched over and protected, as it were, by the taller adults on either side.
