Description
A mother and child patiently await medical attention at a clinic in rural Tanzania. They are the beneficiaries of the outpatient clinic's prenatal and postnatal care, and vaccination program. The mother looks on quietly, and her child appears healthy-a nice change from the more abject images we are often faced with when it comes to reports on the developing world. This image serves as a nice reminder that a mother's love for her children is universal and knows no bounds.
Canada, with other partners, helped fund the innovative Tanzania Essential Health Interventions Project, which trained health care professionals to use scarce resources more effectively. Between 1998 and 2003, in one district alone, infant deaths and deaths of children under the age of 5 have been reduced by an astonishing 50 percent due to this project.
