A market district in Port-au-Prince smoulders after it was set ablaze in the weeks following the January 2010 earthquake in Haiti. Arsonists retaliating against storeowners who had fought back against looters caused this hellish scene. The two women in the photo own small stalls, and they are trying to salvage what is left of their merchandise. Canada continues to provide aid to help rebuild the country.

A young woman snips oregano leaves, preparing them for the dryer, after which they will be packaged and sold. She is a participant in a project the Government of Canada and its partners funded to help Bolivian farmers diversity their crops. More than 1,000 families have benefited from the program, many of them earning an extra $200 a year. Their increased income helps them pay their children's school fees and buy more necessities, such as cooking oil and clothes. This herb cultivation and marketing project is giving entire families hope for the future.

Justin Ngendahimana, 13, lives in the small southern town of Butare at the OPDE (Oeuvre humanitaire pour la Protection et le Développement de l'Enfant en difficulté) Centre, an organization that protects vulnerable children, keeps them off the streets, and offers counselling, health care, and educational programs. He was born about one year after the April 1994 genocide in Rwanda.
Canada is contributing to the rebuilding of Rwanda by supporting such centres as the OPDE, helping farmers diversify their income, advising professionals on rebuilding the justice system, and building new homes for returning refugees.

Youthful energy and dynamic movement give this picture its splendid charm, echoed by the wall art in the background. The joyful spontaneity seems to spell hope, something people think about often in the context of present-day Afghanistan.
"I took this photograph in Kabul while I was in my car and we were beside a school,'' said photographer Leslie Knott. "I looked out the window and saw this boy doing back flips. The background combined with his actions was too perfect. I hopped out of the car and snapped a few while he performed."

This image captures an intimate family moment in Banda Aceh, Indonesia, as a daughter helps her father with his prosthesis. His lower leg was amputated after an injury sustained in the 2004 tsunami that devastated parts of Indonesia, killing 128,000 people and injuring thousands more.
One senses their happiness, excitement, and relief: the father is getting a device that will enable him to walk, allowing him to look forward to more self-reliance and a better quality of life. The prosthesis was provided by the Mennonite Central Committee as part of a large project to help people injured in the tsunami.

A mother and child patiently await medical attention at a clinic in rural Tanzania. They are the beneficiaries of the outpatient clinic's prenatal and postnatal care, and vaccination program. The mother looks on quietly, and her child appears healthy-a nice change from the more abject images we are often faced with when it comes to reports on the developing world. This image serves as a nice reminder that a mother's love for her children is universal and knows no bounds.
Canada, with other partners, helped fund the innovative Tanzania Essential Health Interventions Project, which trained health care professionals to use scarce resources more effectively. Between 1998 and 2003, in one district alone, infant deaths and deaths of children under the age of 5 have been reduced by an astonishing 50 percent due to this project.

This photograph of schoolgirls in Kabul is one of many hundreds of early images of Afghanistan that photographer Pedram Pirnia contributed to our photo library. Canada is helping the Government of Afghanistan build, expand, or repair 50 schools in key districts. There are many challenges to raising the literacy levels in the country, but inroads are being made through teacher training and adult literacy training.
